Nick's eBay items

Well I’ve listed two items on eBay for now…I’ve got a few other things like Bose QC3 headphones, but I use those every day, so that will go up if worse comes to worse.

Currently my Nintendo Wii with 15 games (Wii Sports, Wii Play and EA Madden 2007) are included with 3 controllers. The Buy it now is: $325.

Also, my 30 gig Black Zune is for sale for cheap. Buy it now: $159

Outsourcing and New Oppertunities

Well as you may of read on my twitter feed or on here yesterday, my day job ended. Around 11am I was pulled into my boss’ office, and the IT manager was there too. My boss told me that they had decided to outsource my position (Director of Marketing) to an outside ad agency. The agency had “new ideas” for the company and provided them at “a lower cost.” I guess a company has to cut corners where they can, but when I did nothing wrong I felt I deserved a bit more then just the boot. I got no severance, no vacation pay only my last week’s paycheck.

They gave me a box to pack up my stuff (not having a house, I kept a number of things in my office). I was surprised they didn’t escort me out or watch me pack up. They ironically where nice till the end. I also was a secondary IT person for the company, and an employee there came up to me (not knowing I had been canned) and asked a computer question, which my boss saw me answer. I wanted to ask my boss if anyone there even know I was living out of my car, maybe to rub it in a little, maybe just to acknowledge that they were as observant as a blind person in a dark hallway, but my boss was so nice, I didn’t want to ruin his impression of me. He even offered me a good recommendation, as well as one of the VP’s of the company.

Well now what to do? Well I still blog professionally for Boy Genius Report, and will continue to do that.  I wrote recently about wanting to move to California, and now that I truly have nothing tying me here, it was one of the first ideas to pop into my head. The crazy part is my parents read my blog, and they even mentioned California for me. I was shocked that they would even suggest it, but they mentioned that they were in support of what would make me happy. It made me more confident about the possibility.

I’ve got a storage unit here that I’ve been cleaning out. I will finish doing that very soon and start selling a bunch of the items that are expendable for me. Currently my list includes:

  • 51″ Sony HDTV
  • 30Gb Black Zune
  • Bose Quiet Comfort 3 Headphones
  • MacBook Pro (so I can get downgrade to a MacBook and make a little bit while keeping a computer)
  • Nintendo Wii

No clue on prices yet, and the MBP sale is only a possibility. I think I could get around $16oo-ish for it on eBay, but a new MB with tax is $1300, so is $300 really worth the downgrade? The Wii has 3 games (Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Madden 07) with 2 controllers I am thinking $225-ish for that (all prices based on eBay estimates). Bose headphones I will prob sell on eBay since their resale value is pretty high ($250+). The Zune I could sell for like $180-ish. The TV will be more of a Craislist item, for around $750.

If I sold all of those items for around those prices I wold make around $1700. Would help in terms of a financial buffer. I have a bunch of other items I could have a yard sale at my parents place.

Well now all that remains is getting a job. With all that I have to sell and items I would have to wrap up, I am considering a job temporarily for a month or so, maybe something 2nd shift, so I could still blog during the morning. I’m sure things will work out one way or another, it’s just a huge step moving across the country. As for this “3-day” weekend, I will be hitting up all of the job hunting sites both here in Tampa and in Cali. I could accept a job anywhere in the nation honestly, I just thing I would prefer to move to Cali or stay here in Tampa.

Well that’s the story….from here I’m sure there will be plenty of updates (especially with all the extra time I have). Here’s hoping everything works out for the best.

Google Buys FeedBurner for $100 Million

feedburner Congrats to one of my favorite RSS companies out there, who were purchased by Google for $100,000,000. That’s a lot of zeros, granted not as many as YouTube, but this deal is all in cash money. Feedburner has become a popular tool for bloggers, podcasters and video podcasters because of its ability to translate one feed into many different types of feeds and because it offers a wide range of statistics. The company was founded in 2003 and raised $10 million in VC, meaning quite a payday for everyone involved. Congrats to the team over there.

One question I have, is people who use FeedBurner’s FAN service, will they be able to get Google Ads even if they’ve been booted from Adsense?

Gmail Doubles Attachment Size

Gmail has doubled the attachment size from 10 megs to 20 megs. Now making it even easier to send those large presentations to others, although make sure the person you are sending it to can accept 20 meg attachments. If they can’t, I’d suggest‘s free 1 gig of storage. They provide you with a link, where the other person can download the file.

Skype for Mac – Now with less echo

Most macs (especially laptops) come with a built in mic and speakers (and iSight in the Macbooks). This makes it a great machine for running Skype, but the echo has been pretty bad when using the default setup. Well Skype has worked specifically on that in their latest release. That isn’t the only changes, others include:

  • Join public chats.
  • See when others are typing with typing indicators. (See that busy pen on the screenshot?)
  • Call Skype Prime services to learn new skills or have fun.

WordPress 2.2 Getz Released

Everybody’s favorite blogging platform, WordPress, has launched their latest version today, 2.2. The upgrade is quick and simple, just like all of their other ones. Copy the new files over the old ones, then hit up wp-admin/upgrade.php and your done.

Here’s a list of the main goodies they’ve included in this release:

  • WordPress Widgets allow you to easily rearrange and customize areas of your weblog (usually sidebars) with drag-and-drop simplicity. This functionality was originally available as a plugin Widgets are now included by default in the core code, significantly cleaned up, and enabled for the default themes.
  • Full Atom support, including updating our Atom feeds to use the 1.0 standard spec and including an implementation of the Atom Publishing API to complement our XML-RPC interface.
  • A new Blogger importer that is able to handle the latest version of Google’s Blogger product and seamlessly import posts and comments without any user interaction beyond entering your login.
  • Infinite comment stream, meaning that on your Edit Comments page when you delete or spam a comment using the AJAX links under each comment it will bring in another comment in the background so you always have 20 items on the page. (I know it sounds geeky, but try it!)
  • We now protect you from activating a plugin or editing a file that will break your blog.
  • Core plugin and filter speed optimizations should make everything feel a bit more snappy and lighter on your server.
  • We’ve added a hook for WYSIWYG support in a future version of Safari.
