Google Docs & Spreadsheets

Google Spreadsheet and Google’s aquisition Writely have been merged into one new Google online application, Google Docs & Spreadsheets located at docs.google.com.

They combine a uniform interface for editing all of your ::cough:: Word and ::cough:: Excel documents online without needing to purchase such expensive programs like M$ Word & Excel.

There is a nice browser that shows all of the documents you have worked on over the past 30 days. Similar to their previous versions you can work on any type of document simultaneously with others in a collaboration mode.

Another nice feature is that you can upload Microsoft Word files, or attach a Word file to an email and send it to a specific email address to have it be uploaded. For example, my upload email address looks something like “NickStarr-32qweetz21-xyze20@prod.writely.com”.

The new layout matches Google’s style very closely to Gmail. I personally am glad they finally merged the two, although I was talking with someone the other day about the Writely purchase, and how Google would probably not ever change the name. I just hope that YouTube never ends up being called Google Video.

  1. “Google’s accusation??” I suspect you mean “Google’s aquisition?”

OpenOffice.org is still more powerful than GD&S, but I imagine they’ll catch up not too long.
